GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Mariveles Mountains are in southern Bataan province, near the entrance to Manila Bay, and rise steeply from sea level to 1,420 m. An area of forest is shown there on recent forest cover map;s, which is reported to include both lowland and montane forest, including mossy forest. This includes old reforestation plantations in the former Lamao Arsenal and old growth forest at the peak of Mt. Mariveles.

BIRDS AND OTHER BIODIVERSITY (T- Threatened & R - Restricted-range)

Philippine Hawk-eagle (Spizaetus philippensis) T Specimens were collected at Mariveles in the early 20th century, where it was seen in 1981, and at Lamao in 1947.
Spotted Buttonquail (Turnix ocellata) R Specimens were collected at Lamao in 1947, when it was reported to be common.
Luzon Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica) R Specimens were collected at Lamao in 1947, when it was reported to be very common.
Philippine Cockatoo (Cacatua haematuropygia) T A specimen has been collected at Abucay, but it is almost certainly now extinct in this area.
Green Racquet-tail (Prioniturus luconensis) RT Specimens have been collected at Mariveles and Lamao, most recently in 1947, when the species was described as fairly common in the canopy of original tropical forest.
Red-crested Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus superciliosus) R Specimens have been collected at Lamao, most recently in 1947.
Scale-feathered Malkoha ( Phaenicophaeus cumingi) R Specimens have been collected at Lamao most recently in 1947.
Rufous Coucal (Centropus unirufus) R Specimens have been collected at Lamao and Mt. Cayapo, most recently in 1947.
Philippine Kingfisher (Ceyx melanurus) T A specimen was collected at Lamao in 1947.
Blackish Cuckoo-shrike (Coracina coerulescens) R Specimens have been collected at Lamao and Mariveles, most recently in 1947.
Golden-crowned Babbler (Stachyris dennistouni) R Specimens have been collected at Lamao; Mt. Mariveles; and Mt. Cayapo, most recently in 1947.
Luzon Striped-babbler (Stachyris striata) R Specimens have been collected on the southwest slope of Mt. Mariveles.
Ijima's Leaf-warbler (Phylloscopus ijimae) T Six specimens were collected at Mt. Cayapo, Lamao in 1947, the only Philippine record of this non-breeding visitor from Japan.
Celestial Monarch (Hypothymis coelestis) RT Specimens were collected at Mariveles in the early 20th century.
White-fronted Tit (Parus semilarvants) R Specimens were collected at Lamao and Mt. Cayapo in 1947, where it was described as rare.
White-lored Oriole (Oriolus albiloris) R Specimens have been collected at Lamao and Mt. Mariveles, most recently in 1947 and 1961 respectively.
Isabela Oriole (Oriolus isabellae) RT Specimens were collected along the Lamao River, 5 km inland from Manila Bay, in 1947, and at Mariveles in the early 20th century.

Many of the threatened and restricted-range birds of the Luzon Endemic Bird Areas have been recorded in or near to this IBA, but there is little recent information on their status there. This is the only site in the Philippines where Ijima's Leafe-warbler has been recorded, although this species is difficult to locate and identify and presumably also winter elsewhere in the islands. It is also notable for the records o the highly threatened Isabela Oriole, and this species, Luzon Striped-babbler and Furtive Flycather appear to have unusual disjunct, being recorded from the Bataan peninsula and the Sierra Madre in eastern Luzon. However, this may prove to be a result of gaps in the coverage of some other parts of Luzon by ornithologists. A subspecies of Elegant Tit, Parus elegans gilliardi, is only known from the Bataan peninsula..

CONSERVATION ISSUES

Potential threats to this IBA include exploration for mining, should applications be approved.

Surveys are required in this IBA, to investigate both the extent and quality of the remaining habitats and the current status of the threatened and restricted-range birds and other biodiversity.
